Cinema from the Spectrum

Outcome is a meta-textual comedy starring Keanu Reeves as Reef Hawk and was written and directed by Jonah Hill. Outcome is centered around a child actor turned leading man ready for his comeback after taking a break from the spotlight. Just as he’s ready to return to the acting scene, he is blackmailed with a video of his drug use–heroin specifically. Under the advice of his lawyer Hawk sets out to make amends on those he may have wronged to find who is responsible.

This film continues a change of pace for Keanu with him returning to comedies after the very successful action driven John Wick series. Despite Keanu’s best effort, he hasn’t found critical success within the comedy space as of late. In Outcome, Keanu’s quiet demeanour helps showcase the vulnerability in how one feels to be perceived by the public vs who they feel they actually are. The film isn’t just a vehicle for Keanu; Cameron Diaz and Matt Bomer as his best friends from high school that have stuck with him through all these years. This pairing generally works and gives some needed levity between the conflicts on screen. Jonah Hill also appears in the film as Hawk’s lawyer who doesn’t necessarily give him the best advice and serves as a parody of a celebrity entourage. 

Martin Scorsese also cameos as his former manager from when he was a child actor. Scorsese plays a washed up child agent, Ritchie “Red” Rodriguez who has fallen on hard times. His screen time is not long but helps tether to the character of Reef Hawk and the way childhood stardom often fractures adults. Scorsese provides a warmth through the cynicism that made some of this movie worthwhile, however it doesn’t do a lot with Reef’s stilted past.

The film ultimately feels shallow because there is no real depth or insight towards these character. The commentary on cancel culture does not go anywhere because the characters face no real consequences for their actions. While everyone within this ensemble gives it their all, the comedy doesn’t land and feels like it wants to be edgy whenever the film tries to be introspective. Jonah Hill as a director has become a real mixed bag for me because his films feel as if they don’t have the appropriate lived-in experience to properly convey the story he is trying to tell. The Outcome as a result is a mixed bag that wastes legacy by not saying anything meaningful.

What I loved about Outcome was Benoit Debie’s cinematography gives the film a vibrant and artificial look that shows the vulgarity and depravity of Los Angeles and how at times it feels less and less like a real place. To accompany the quality of this cinematography the film had a solid production design with almost sterile living in spaces. As for the musical score, I found that while strong, it felt at odds with the quality of the film but had nice crescendos for when tension would erupt within the film.

Outcome is a meditative film about media vs celebrity and how that impacts a life leading with different personas. Unfortunately, the film does not dig deep enough to become a substantial reflection despite the cast’s best efforts. Jonah Hill has grand ideas but struggles to adapt them for the screen.
